A Prelude to Social Bookmarking

Friday, March 13th, 2009
Social bookmarking is a simple procedure and when you e-mail someone and ask them to visit a page, what you are actually doing is participating in the process called social bookmarking. In online jargon social bookmarking means tagging a site and saving it so that the user can visit that site at a later date. Rather than saving a website in your browser, you save it online and then share with your friends, family and colleagues.

From working for individuals social networking has become a tool to be used by business corporations and websites. Social bookmarking sites allow a user to browse through their network so that he or she can check out what sites others find interesting. The book marks in such sites are searchable from categories like shopping, politics, business and blogging to sports, news, crime and more. These networks are more sophisticated and can be used to search in a unique way as per your interest.

In the present day of e commerce, social bookmarking is an essential part of any business. It allows you to generate specific target markets and hence allows your potential customers to find your website. By using these social networking sites you can constantly update your data at once throughout the network and keep adding to the database.

As users participate in the network it is easy for businesses to add to their network by providing valid and relevant information and targeting a specific audience. The users votes help create a forum and many visitors can be turned into sales. More and more users are going to these social bookmarking sites to find the websites of their interest. They simply put in their keyword and get a more targeted response.

The social networking sites use keywords as tags that can be chosen by the account manager to create a set of categories for better organization. By using RSS feed the account could be managed to merge all feeds into one central box so that it is easier to keep track of all the bookmarks that people are adding to the community. Social bookmarking is a form of goodwill being spread through a unique marketing method.

Autopilot Social Bookmarking: Would Social Bookmarking Sites Ban You?

Thursday, March 12th, 2009
I’m sure you have heard much Social Bookmarking. What is it exactly? When you list a site in your bookmark list, anyone looking for that same type of information can do a search at the bookmark site and find the sites that you have bookmarked. It is like a search engine without all the trash.

All Social Bookmarking sites provide a refreshing change for user oriented search. Setting bookmarking tags provide a much better system as compared to categories because unlike a browser - you can use more than one tag. Social Bookmarking will be the future of searches because its powered by humans; assessed by humans and voted on by humans!.

In the old days. If you are looking for a great blog to read in the morning then you will love the chance to find out the most popular blog via your favorite bookmarking site!. Tagging is using single words or phrases (separated by commas or spaces) to describe the links you are posting on these Social Bookmarking sites.

Social bookmarking saves uploading a bunch of urls to your domain or remembering to send them to your Aunt Sally before you visit on the off chance you’ll need to remember that special something while you’re away. About 6% of my referrers this month are http://del.icio.us related including .8% off the home page meaning that people click on my link when they see it pop up in their RSS feed. Check out http://www.trafficwebsecrets.com/socialbookmarking/bookmarking_demon.html.

Social bookmarking sites also help you to meet other people who are interested in the same topics you are and who may also have knowledge of web resources that you don’t. But by organizing your bookmarks online; you can help yourself (getting organized/ getting my content exposed) and help others at the same time to finding great content. Watch out for typos. . Put Social Bookmarking on Autopilot!

Social Bookmarking Sites: How They Can Help the Webmaster

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
Social bookmarking is quickly becoming one of the many popular aspects of what we know as web 2.0.  It is becoming a very effective way for web surfers to find the latest information and news on any subject they want.  Social bookmarking sites use viral marketing and popular opinion and have the ability to discover what is important before any search engine bot can spider the site and rank it among the thousands of sites out there on the internet.  It is becoming a crucial part of any business’ online presence and is a source of traffic for your site that should not be ignored.

Social bookmarking is a powerful tool in promoting a website and may just be the best way to boost the traffic to your site.  Webmasters now have the ability to display a variety of bookmarking buttons on their web pages and the surfer can then easily bookmark the site or specific page.  One little click on the relevant button that is being displayed, the surfer will be taken to their favorite bookmarking account.  Multiple social bookmarking sites are combined on one page into one button to make it easier for the surfer and no work is required by the webmaster.

Optimizing your web pages for Google and all the other major search engines is not enough anymore.  The only way to be successful at online marketing is to include the online community as part of your marketing efforts and to not ignore the effectiveness of web 2.0.  Social bookmarking can help you get your sites out there on 47 of the best social bookmarking sites in under 15 minutes.  The more people that bookmark your site, the more organic traffic you will get, as well as backlinks which will give it authority in Google.  Now keep in mind that social bookmarking alone will not give you a top search engine ranking, but it will definitely not hurt your marketing efforts.

If you are going to try to reach the social bookmarking audience, then make sure you include Digg on your pages because the audience is so large.  Digg is a high power authority and a listing will rank highly on Google and other search engines for certain terms.  Searchles is loved by Google, Yahoo and the other major search engines.  StartAid bookmark pages rank highly in Google and other search engines as well.  Listing your sites in Furl will lead to traffic from organic rankings and its popular page drives traffic.  Best of all, StumbleUpon can send major traffic with its user base of around 3 million and currently brings in more traffic than any other social bookmarking site.  A great place to find a button to add all of these services to your site is www.addthis.com and is free.

Free exposure is always going to be the best alternative for the webmaster, and social bookmarking services like these as well as other web 2.0 sites are great ways to get a lot of free exposure and traffic.  This isn’t only good for building backlinks, but people search on bookmark sites to find information as well.  Do not ignore the major bookmarking sites, or you are ignoring some of your potential subscribers or customers.

If one of your main concerns is getting repeat traffic, then you must make it easy for your visitors to add your web pages or site to their social bookmarking services.  Word-of-mouth advertising is often underestimated and overlooked, but this can drive a lot of traffic to your content and create buzz.  Web 2.0 sites like bookmarking services get millions of hits a day, so it would be wise for you to start utilizing them on your site to increase both real traffic and get long term incoming links.

The War Between Black Hat And Social Bookmarking Sites

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
There was an era of social bookmarking. You could use a software to blast your website to these sites and get tons of one way links. It is not working efficiently any more, it is getting too difficult now.

Social bookmarking websites adopted to spam by using the nofollow tags. The same things happened with other websites, like Yahoo Answers which was a great tool to get your website indexed fast.

There are still some social bookmarking websites that are good, but most of them are not.

You have to pick them one by one which can be time consuming. It also means it is wiser not to invest your money in software that auto submit to these sites, if you are looking to get backlinks.

It does not mean these sites are totally useless. You can get tons of traffic, but not a useful strategy to get backlinks. This does not mean you should completely ignore social bookmarking websites, but you need to be more careful how you spend you time and money.

There are services who still do social bookmarking. There are software which still submit to these sites. The salespages will not change to show the complete truth. The services want

to make money, they will not adopt to the change maybe because they do not want to loose clients or it can be any other reason.

Bottom line is, social bookmarking websites are no longer effective to get a ton of backlinks like they once was.

If you think about it, it is not their fault. It is an advantage for them to use the nofollow tag, so they get rid of spammers who constantly submit their website or useless doorway pages just to get backlinks. There was black hat software as well, to automatically create accounts in these websites and then get a ton of backlinks easily.

All these things effected the change.

Social bookmarking websites do not need this stuff. They are created to help visitors as a service to allow them to bookmark websites they like or frequently visit.

Spamming creates problems for them. It totally makes things ugly for them.

That is why black hat software do not have a long term value. Most of the tasks they automate are nasty in some way or another. Now why do you think these black hat software still get promoted, still get purchased and still new pieces of software get created?

The owner makes a ton of money selling these software, especially selling to the so called newbies. The salespage can be full of big promises but they do not mention the bottom line.

The bottom line is the black hat software they are selling will sooner or later be completely ineffective. This is really bad.

If you have a hundred, thousand or any number of backlinks created by these software like blog comments you just lost all those backlinks. When blogs adopted the nofollow tag all those links got useless. It means a sudden drop in the rankings.

Search engines just like the owners of the social bookmarking websites notice spam and adopt to it as well. They like the backlinks you get which remain there for a long period of time.

So be careful when using black hat software, and think twice if you are going to spend some time or money on social bookmarking websites.

Thought Process of a Social Bookmarker

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
Copyright (c) 2008 Sean S Sampson

Social bookmarking offers many opportunities for marketers to collect information and learn about the behavior patterns of their customers, as well as firsthand reviews for particular brands and products. Social bookmarking sites are chock full of different perspectives and information, and all of this is stored in an easily searchable database.

Since like-minded individuals are creating tags on every item they post, it becomes easy to find relevant products and related subjects within each area of interest.

Social bookmarkers are primarily interested in learning more about products and ideas that interest them, and will network accordingly. They are more exposed to new information, whether this is pulled from blogs, media sites, or simply a product page from a business. The more involved marketers are with these social networks, the higher the chances of increased brand exposure. As more social bookmarkers participate in their communities, the buzz about a particular product or idea can easily be broadcast across multiple markets with very little effort.

The thinking process of a social bookmarker is relatively simple. First, they find an idea or product of interest. They then upload this information to the social bookmarking platform, whether this is a news site such as Digg.com, or a social shopping sites such as ThisNext.com. Next, they describe the product or idea, usually posting a brief summary that includes keywords and other relevant information. This is noted on the social bookmarking site’s search engine, as well as the tags that are added to the item after this. Once complete, a picture or other media clip may be added, followed by the social bookmarker’s signature (if it does not automatically get posted as part of the profile). Once submitted, the new item is organized and implemented into the appropriate category on the site.

Any new information posted to the site can now be viewed by the entire audience; subscribers to various channels will see new topics posted immediately, in a very similar format to an RSS feed on a blog. In either case, this fresh information will be on the ‘roster’ of all the people in that community. If others find it important as well, this increases the chances of sharing as they are more likely to ‘note’ it and include it on their lists.

But what does all this mean for the marketer?

Essentially, this means that the marketer or business can create unique content and products to send to various social bookmarking sites. Once they create a valuable presence, it becomes much easier to influence the decision makers in each and every community. This is the essence of social bookmarking and networking at its best; community building can create a network of influence that can now also be enjoyed by marketers and entrepreneurs on the web.
