Pregnancy and Exercise

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009
Everyone knows that exercise is very good for your health. During pregnancy, exercise can have many other benefits as well. Normally, exercise should be light, especially during your first few weeks of pregnancy while your body adjusts to the changes.

Any type of heavy exercise can divert the blood flow from crucial areas, and most women that exercise on a regular basis should tone down their workout regimen during pregnancy.

Swimming, walking, and yoga are two very popular exercise activities that are suitable for pregnant women. There are other forms of exercise such as weight lifting that are acceptable as long as it isn’t too strenuous. Most specialists recommend exercise 3 - 4 times a week, unless you have a medical condition that prevents it. If you are ever in doubt, you should consult a physician first.

Below, you’ll find some of the best reasons as to why you should exercise during pregnancy.

1. Exercise can help to reduce the length of labor and recovery time. The right exercise routines will also increase stamina that is needed for delivery.     2. Improved mental health. Exercise can lower stress and improve your emotional health, making it easier for you to get through the new experience of becoming a mother.

3. Exercise can also help with weight management after the child has been born. A common concern with most mothers is the weight they lose after pregnancy. During pregnancy, exercise can make postpartum weight loss easier.

4. Exercise is very good for your unborn baby. By keeping your body healthy, you are also looking out for your baby as well.

5. Exercise can help reduce the side effects of pregnancy. Symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, swelling, and constipation are all common with pregnant women. Studies have shown exercise to reduce the occurrence of these symptoms.

6. Exercise can also decrease the risk of premature birth. Exercise has been proven to decrease the risk of premature birth by at least 50%.

You should always make sure that you drink plenty of fluids before you exercise, follow a nutritious diet, and avoid over exertion. You should also listen to your body, and if you start feeling sick you should immediately stop and rest.

If you exercise during your pregnancy, you’ll find it a lot easier to deliver when the time comes. Exercise will help your body strengthen up, which will make it very easy on you when you go into the delivery room. Women who don’t exercise find it much harder when the time comes to give birth.

Exercising during pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for yourself and for your unborn baby. Your baby will reap some of the benefits, which is reason enough to exercise. Always be safe when you exercise, and don’t hesitate to ask a doctor for advice if you have any questions at all. As long as you exercise safe and use good common sense, you’ll do a world of good for your pregnancy.

Pregnancy Health - your Primary Asset

Monday, May 25th, 2009
Healthy mothers deliver healthy and happy babies.’ - This is not just a quote, it has a deeper significance, and the importance of pregnancy health deserves to be elaborated upon before each and every would-be mother. Usually, one takes the matter of one’s health very casually. If you do not visit the doctor every now and then, you think you are quite healthy. However, this is seldom true. Visiting the doctor has nothing to do with good health. Any laxity on the part of the mother at any stage of pregnancy can have a serious effect on the pregnancy health of the baby and at times the mother as well. Therefore, it would be a wise idea to keep a weekly pregnancy calendar to monitor your health, because your pregnancy health has a direct bearing on the health of the baby in your womb. Always try to remain in the pink of health.

Pregnancy Health - Never Be Complacent

Once you get aware of the early sign of pregnancy, you should start controlling your diet by taking foods rich in protein, vitamins and energy because as the fetus grows in your body it starts to feed on the minerals of, which saps your energy levels. Once in this stage you constantly feel lethargic and weak, besides, you constantly feel pangs of hunger to replenish the energy of your body and provide food to the young one inside you.

During this period when you have missed your first period, which is the first sign of pregnancy, you may experience body pains, which are normal because now your body will get ready for the physical changes that are required to deliver the baby. To get relief from pain you can take hot water massages on the affected area, which is usually the area of the abdomen and your back. At the same time, avoid taking too much strain or picking up heavy objects. Maintain good pregnancy health.

You might notice that your breasts feel tender and are becoming bigger and heavier as your pregnancy proceeds. Sometimes, a thick yellowish fluid oozes out of the nipples. Do not be worried. This is colostrums, which contains antibodies for the health of your baby. Usually this happens in the third trimester. You can make yourself comfortable in such a situation by using bras with pads to avoid embarrassment in public places.

It always pays to remain alert during the period of your pregnancy. Always keep a pregnancy journal, which records your pregnancy health on a daily basis. You can also undertake exercises or Yoga on the advice of your doctor to remain active. At the same time, keep on the lookout for any unusual activity like bleeding or leaking from the vagina, inflammation, persistent itching or vomiting, blurred vision, etc.

In such cases, consult your physician immediately.

Common Complaints-pregnancy

Monday, May 25th, 2009
Pregnancy brings with it a raft of physical changes, most of which are not particularly pleasant. While causing some women considerable misery, most are not signs of a serious problem.

Common pregnancy complaints are especially trying for women over 35. Older women may interpret some of the discomforts of pregnancy as more severe because of their age. Most of the time this is not the case. Younger women have all of the same complaints and problems that you will experience, although in some instances your age may make the symptoms worse or make it more likely that you will experience a particular symptom.

General Physical Health

Pregnancy may exacerbate some of the general physical problems that tend to become more common as we age. For example back pain is common in pregnancy but also increases as we age. Women need to take especially good care of their backs during pregnancy back strengthening exercises, careful lifting technique, and workplace modifications are all especially important.

Stress incontinence, which is the involuntary loss of urine with coughing or laughing, is more common as we age and can first appear during pregnancy. For this reason, doing pelvic floor exercises may be especially important in older mothers. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and may be more sensitive to some of the changes caused by pregnancy, possibly including such things as stretch marks. If you have been pregnant before, you may notice more pelvic pain in this pregnancy because of loosening and shifting of your pelvic ligaments.

Treating Problems

Your care provider can provide useful tips for dealing with most minor complaints of pregnancy. Often, simple measures are helpful such as raising your legs if your legs and ankles are swollen. Always check with your doctor before taking any medication, even over the counter products.

Vitamins

Vitamins like C, D, E and the B complex family, enzymes like CoQ 10 and essential fatty acids that are found in fish and certain vegetable oils all have proven antioxidant properties. Many of us are already aware that the wide variety of vitamins and natural supplements available over-the-counter lack this kind of quality. What about children? This question of whether or not children should be taking natural health supplements is answerable by asking yourself one simple question: do your children get enough vitamins and minerals in their daily diet to help them face the challenges of modern life. If your child has allergies, then there’s a good chance that they are not receiving the required level of vitamins and minerals they need. Daily vitamins (all found in herbs) are just one example of natural health products that in the modern era, we’ve come to accept as a part of our lifestyle.

Going Back to Work After a Pregnancy

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
Once you return to work, you can continue to breast feed. If you live close to work or have an on site daycare, you may be able to breast feed during your breaks. If that isn’t possible, you have 2 choices:     1. Keep your milk supply by using a high quality automatic electric breast pump to express milk during the day. Save your milk that you collect for your baby sitter.      2. If you don’t want to or can’t pump at work, you can gradually replace daytime feedings with formula while your at home but still continue to nurse at night and in the morning. The milk your body produces may not be enough to keep your baby satisfied, even if you only need enough for 2 feedings.

Advantages of pumping at work Pumping at work will help stimulate your production of milk, so you’ll have plenty available when it comes time to feed. You can also collect the milk you pump, so your baby will have the health and nutritional benefits of breast milk even when you aren’t there. To make things better, pumping can be an ideal way to feel a connection to your baby during the work day.

Although it can seem like a hassle, many mothers find that the benefits of breast pumping far outweight the inconvenience.

To manage pumping at work, you’ll need to have the following:     1. Breast pump, preferably a fully automatic electric pump with a double collection kit so you can pump both breasts simultaneously.     2. Bottles or bags for collecting and storing the milk.     3. Access to a refrigerator or cooler to keep the milk cold until you return home.     4. Breast pads to help protect your clothes if you start to leak.

Make sure that you get used to pumping before you return to work, so you’ll know what to expect and how it feels. You’ll be much more confident with pumping at work if you already know that you can produce enough milk.

At work, you’ll want to have somewhere that’s away from everyone else when you pump, such as an empty office or empty room. This way, you’ll be away from everyone else and you can have the quiet tranquility you need to pump. In most offices, this shouldn’t be a problem.

For the time frame, you’ll want to pump every 2 - 3 hours if possible. If you can’t, every 4 hours or so will have to suffice. After you have finished pumping, store the milk in the bags or bottles, clean yourself up, then go back to work. When you return home, you can feed the milk to your growing baby.
