Why a personal relationship with a god/Creator is impossible?

Ben B asked:

Id like to open this debate on a thought I had a few days ago. Please share your thoughts. All welcome. Be nice.

The nature of the relationship prevents any true intimacy btw creator and created. God remains the distant, unfathomable almighty superior who knows but cannot be known.

So did Adam’s ideal perfect relationship with God exist before the fall? Apparently not. He was lonely so Eve(another human) was created of Adam himself for companionship. Was man’s relationship with god was not fulfilling for Adam? Surely if it was man alone with god, that would be more than satisfying for an eternity? But Adam was lonely and in need of true intimacy, which his god and creator could not or would not provide.

So does this mean then that striving for an intimate relationship with god is futile? Does the seperation of createor an created maintain the seperation between servant and master? Are we limiting our concept of God altogether?

Why Adam and not other ‘true’ men of god?: Adam’s relationship with god would have to be the closest man had with god. Before the fall man had an unbroken link to his creator. Old and New Testament charactrers as David etc. were thus limited in their relationship to god since thay existed in the fallen era or after the fall of Adam. Their relationship to God would not be as ‘perfect’ as before the fall with Adam.
Rather than question the existence of god/creator/essence/source of things, ask if a personal relationship with such an entity is a worthwhile aim or even possible.
Thanks to all for your generous and thoughtful views. I appreciate it.

Well for a start, assuming that god exists, it is impossible to share a personal relationship with an entity that fails to show itself

God is make believe and only exists in your state of mind. Trying to make sense of what God is or isn’t is all up to you (and your state of mind).

Before I answer this question, I have a question for you: why do you choose to use Adam’s’ relationship with God rather than David’s or Christ’s (these are two examples that almost definitively relay that a relationship with God is entirely possible and sustainable)? If you’re going to use Biblical references, why not consider them all?

The reason I mention David and Christ is because I see a direct, spiritual evolution between the three. I honestly believe that Christ and David are reincarnations of Adam (and there is biblical evidence for this). If one were to go backwards beginning with Christ, we see the ultimate mastery of faith, forgiveness, and love. When looking at David we see him demonstrate high levels of faith and forgiveness, however when looking at Adam, I personally don’t see a comprehension of either faith, love, or forgiveness. The Bible is a spiritual guide, and it allows us a glimpse of Adam’s spiritual journey in achieving ultimate enlightennment (one of faith, forgiveness and love).

I really believe Adam’s story, is one of a lack in faith. He didn’t realize that he only needed God to sustain him, and he failed to recognize the presence of God around him. Secondly, read the Bible again. It is not Adam that asks for companionship, it is God that decides he needs it 2:18 “And the Lord said, “It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him an help meet for him.”". There is never a verse where Adam asks God for anything. In fact, the only times Adam is seen speaking with God is: 1. When he’s naming the animals and 2. When he’s confessing. Lastly, keep in mind the physical closeness the Bible portrays God as having with Adam. Genesis 3:8 “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day..”

I’m really not the type of person to post Bible quotes and what not, and I don’t even consider myself Christian. I read the Bible to achieve a higher consciousness and spiritual awareness (along with other things). I really think there is a lot of confusion and disbelief in God because people spend more time trying to debunk theories than they do listening to their hearts. The Bible is a spiritual book. Look at the progression of Adam spiritually in the Bible as David and Christ and you will find that his entire existence is portrayed for the fact of relaying one’s ability to develop a close, loving personal relationship with “God”. That doesn’t mean a Christian God or Muslim God or what have you, but that “higher source” that is filled with love and forgiveness.

If you have any more questions, let me know. God bless.

EDIT: In regards to your second question, what if I’ve considered that and decide it IS worthwhile to develop a relationship with God. Then what?
I think you’re using a limited view of what you think “God” is and you’re trying to manipulate that into a philosophical question. You only use Christian examples…?

If the goal of your question is to get people thinking whether belief in a God is worthwhile (while albeit virtuous in its attempt), you fail to consider all viewpoints and ideologies of what comprises “God”. Unless of course you were only addressing this question to Christians (which would mean your question could probably be better answered in the Religion and Spirituality) section…

We are just toys in the flesh. We are one of the many creatures living in this world. Human beings have been interesting subject to God. Therefore God is interested to develop the intelligence of human beings further and further so that they can understand Him in future. At present God educating human beings in several ways. One of these ways is Science. If we study well we can come to a conclusion about the relationship between God and human beings. As far as I know the relationship between God and human beings is similar to a scientist and robots created by the scientist. If any one say God we always think of magic not the science. We always keep science aloof from him. Some people believe that everything happens in life is for some reason. So also we can believe that everything happens in this world is for reason. Today’s generation is not like ancient people. Yet today’s generation need more intelligence to understand God. At present God is in this mission. Sooner or later all may get an idea Who is God?, What is God? and What is the relationship between God and Human beings?

It is possible to have an intimate relationship with the Creator… Adam had too much to do and was a little lonely ( OK, Adam noticed that all the other creatures had mates, and he didn’t), so God created Eve, his best friend and helpmate to alleviate the loneliness.
There need not be the separation of servant and master, but the loving relationship of Father and child.

Who said that it is impossible? I haven’t read the entire Bible but I don’t think it says so. I personally believe that it is every bit possible. Indeed, it is my personal conviction that God wants us to have a personal relationship with him. Which father would tell his children, “I don’t want to talk with you or have any form of relationship with you. Whatever you wish to say to me, tell your mother (or whoever)” !! It doesn’t make sense to me. I have read some books, done some thinking, some mind-science, and I have come to believe that we (all of us) have the faculties to have a direct relationship with God, as did all the (true) spiritual Masters. That is why we have Revealed knowledge as contained in the Vedas, the Bible, the Quran, etc. God revealed the information to someone (the Master) who then wrote it down or told someone else who then wrote it down. So God must have had a personal relationship with someone to have revealed the knowledge to that someone. That being the case, why won’t He have a personal relationship with any one else? Are we lesser human beings? I don’t think so. It can be done and indeed is being done. No, the relationship between man and God is not between master and servant. God doesn’t assume any mastery over us. He doesn’t order us around. Rather, it is between the Creator and the Creation. If we accept the Creation as being part of the Creator or, better still, being one with the Creator, then we are getting a step closer to that direct relationship. God gives us a free hand and waits patiently for us to reciprocate. Okay, okay, I don’t have all the answers. I am also still investigating.

This is long, but please read because I think you askeed a very important question which I have asked myself too and wrote this on my computer about 2 months ago. I found it shows that a relationship with God IS possible.

Through my constant soul searching and questioning of creation, I know there is more to life than the “idea” of God. Although God cannot be seen, I can write definitely, “I know” Him and fully know His truth which is ultimately the answer to the basic questions of life’s purpose as they pertain to God’s will for humanity. To be human, in my opinion, is to be made by God, in the image of God.

When God created man, he gave man the same attributes of intelligence and will as that of Himself. Genesis 1:27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Having believed in God’s order of creation, I believe God created man to have a relationship with Him.

Genesis 3:8 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”

The relationship that Adam and Eve had with God changed when their nature changed. The nature of God is one of pure holiness. To be in His presence, Adam and Eve possessed a nature of righteousness accepted by God. It was not until their nature changed through disobedience (breaking God’s commandment to not eat from the tree of life) that their relationship with God changed. God could no longer “look at them the same” since they no longer had “approved” righteousness in His eyes. They “hid themselves from the presence of the Lord,” thus showing that at one time, they were unashamed and walked in perfect harmony with God.

God’s omnipotence and holiness are not shared with anyone or anything. Humans, angels, and all of creation, do not have the authority of God Almighty. There is only one God, and all else is subject to Him. God created us, and although we are made in His image, we are not perfect holiness as He is and that is why Adam and Eve were susceptible to unrighteousness or “sin.”

The answer to my search for how humans even have the capacity or the “heart” to do wrong came in the form of prayer and meditation. How could Adam and Eve transgress God’s law when they experienced his majesty on a daily basis? (Or, like your question, why was Adam not satisfied enough with God only?) This thought perplexed me.

I was reminded of the verse in the bible of when God told Moses to tell the Israelites His name: Exodus 3:14, “I am who I am.” This verse teaches humanity that God alone is God. God alone is holy. There is no other God but Him. It teaches humanity that we are frail. We are not omniscient, but God is. It reminds us that we are the created, not the creator.

Surprisingly, the verse gave me great peace and understanding of humanity’s nature. How can mankind possess unrighteousness? Did God create us to have the heart of unrighteousness? No, I believe we are born with the sinful nature inherited from the transgression of Adam and Eve. Since we have this “spiritual block” God had to do something to save us. We cannot save ourselves from this block that causes our souls to be in jeopardy. To be with God for eternity, our souls would have to be brought to perfect harmony, righteoussness approved by God how it was when Adam walked with God (above).

Therefore, God gave us Jesus Christ, perfect soul, perfect relationship (The Father & Son & Holy Spirit) to cover our “imperfections” and that gap in the relationship between man and God. Jesus’ sacrifice of atonement bridged the relationship between man and God into an obtainable, righteous, and “approved righteousness” by God.

Once one accepts the gospel, God’s truth of his forgiveness, understanding, and love to mankind, and accepts Jesus as his/her savior, the relationship our souls are meant for will find its true place.

Why impossible. very possible. . Would you do it? God is always welcome, just one move.Impeccable intention. That’s all. But once it happen God will withdraw you from the crowd . Imagine never ending revelations of a Truth , Gods Gift for you.Well your first move will be to let people know that they are not right, right? still being among people in a way , first you will be diagnosed by doctor but if you tell doctor or someone else where you getting your Truth you might be heavily diagnosed, so to understand that in prior makes you kind of lonely as God are.Well do not forget that you are immage and likeness now at last.If you will insist of claiming of your new origin, there will be huge assortiment of Crosses, neils, and hummers available for your painful experiences just to be sure how much people “believe Love and defend”", yes defend omnipowerful God, from “self-proclaimed freaks…same sinners as they all are. So there will be a number of new responcibilities for you to adopt just for your own safety from the rest of God’s lovers which do not have a relationship with Him whatsoever. The relationship of your fellow men is with anything, but God. It would be relationship with religion, Bibles, between each other, with their beliefs name it and all of those is what they are.God is God , other thing is his creations that makes them what they are. Now it had been said that dust goes to dust…and in the same time it had been said that we are returning to God, remember? Sounds as a contradiction but not at all. it is a challenge for you to figure out what is what and who is who where is a dust and who are you in relation with it, if any. I’ll give you a tip. There is only two states available for human being is to relate to something or be it. Personal Relationship with God leads to Oneness with God, so at the end it excludes any relationship , any duality in which any “relationship” rest…How it will looks like, never know, our 5 senses based on dual perceptions.. it is matter of your own experiences, by the way there will be limit in a human language to express or to explain people what is going on truly, so some may blindly follow you and some will angerly deny your existence. This is messia’s usual burden..two extremes histerical love of hysterical ****…so you will learn to be invisible, transparent also promised to be extremely alone.

You state that you do not want people to question the existence of a creator. Isn’t that an essential first point in seeking an answer to your question? A relationship is not possible if a creator does not exist.

In the details about your question, you assume that there was a man named Adam from whom Eve was created. While I am unaware of any clear, compelling evidence for a creator, there is abundant evidence that people evolved from an earlier primate, that in turn evolved from an earlier insectivore, and so on back to simple bacteria.

There does not appear to have been a creator. If not, then your question is moot.
